4 Essential items for your computer and Why.

Computers, though expensive, have become the most important tools in our lives. We use them for our daily tasks, and they keep us connected to the rest of the world. Taking good care of them is a habit we need to cultivate, and as such, we recommend you add these few items to your computer care toolkit.

  1. External Disks

Mainly for two reasons.

Backup storage; we know cloud backup exits, but hear me out, you need to have something offline when you are not connected or have a budget internet plan, especially when dealing with large files like video or audio. It is always handy and often easier to have a hard disk for quick access and storage without hogging your data plan.

Second storage (offline or cloud-based); You could also save part or all your files on them. That way you avoid filling up your local disk. Your computer will literally reward you for this. A full local disk gives your computer a “slowing-down” syndrome. You know, it becomes slow, annoyingly slow. There is a lot of science to why but the bottom line is, keep your local disk at less than 60% capacity.

2. An updated Antivirus

There is a lot of debate on whether modern operating systems need an antivirus. And not surprisingly, the general consensus is that if you frequent dubious websites – you know, the ones you’re ashamed of, that seem heavily infested with pirated software, viruses and malware? Well, not even the best antivirus will help. Just stay away from them.

As for general best practices, if you do decide to get an antivirus, make sure it is a genuine software, licensed and keep it up to date. Computer viruses like human viruses tend to get variants with time, and antivirus creating companies update their antivirus to keep up. An outdated antivirus is like an expired medication, it will end up doing more harm than good.

3. Table for your drinks & Snacks

Drinks and snacks are not meant to be your computer’s companions, once they find their way in your keyboard, or any other part for that matter, they will ruin it. A glass of water could easily force you to buy a new computer and fast. So don’t use your work desk for eating and drinking. Get a separate table or desk for your drinks and snacks, away from your computer.

4. Cotton Cloth

A cotton cloth is an all in one must-have item; Dampen it a little and you’ll be able to clean your mouse, keyboard, monitor and computer case. Just make sure it is turned off and unplugged from power before you start.
